BEACHES

Copacabana Beach

The world’s most famous strip of sand, Copacabana beach is nicknamed by the locals “Little Princess of the Sea”, a popular Brazilian song. Copacabana beach is located in the neighborhood of the same name, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. There is also great interest in the beautiful wide sidewalk on Avenida Atlântica with Portuguese paving stones in black and white, forming an attractive mosaic in the shape of waves, inspired on the Lisbon sidewalk and used by Burle Marx on the beach. The biggest New Year’s Eve festivities on the planet is held on Copacabana beach, with the world renowned fireworks, bringing together over three million people. Sundays are especially great for people watching as the Ave. Atlântica is closed to vehicular traffic and open to pedestrians.

Location: Along Avenida Atlântica from Arpoador to Leme.

 


 

Ipanema Beach


The beach at Ipanema became widely known by the song “ The Girl from Ipanema” (“Garota de Ipanema“), written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Ipanema beach is located in the neighborhood of the same name, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. In the winter the surf can reach 9 feet. There is an area called “the gay beach,” situated near in the area of “posto 9″ (lifeguard tower 9), near Rua Farme de Amoedo which is well-known for being a gay-friendly area, with the rainbow flag flying in the air.

Directions: Take the BUS 014 CASTELO close to BAR DO GOMES OR from Largo dos Guimarães (in front of the cinema) take the BUSES 006, 007 or 014 and get off at RUA DO RIACHUELO further down the hill at the first set of traffic lights. Head to your right to take the BUS 464 LEBLON. Get off at Ipanema.

Take the BUS 014 CASTELO close to BAR DO GOMES OR from Largo dos Guimarães (in front of the cinema) take the BUSES 006 or 014 and get off at the CARIOCA METRO STATION. From there, take the METRO towards the South Zone. The last metro stop on this line is Ipanema.

 


 

Barra da Tijuca Beach


Sweeping some eighteen kilometers south of the city, this magnificent beach is the longest in Rio. Clear waters and perfect waves make this beach a favorite with surfers, boogie-boarders, windsurfers and surf-casters. Lined with colorful bars, kiosks and restaurants, this beach is attracting increasingly large crowds of visitors, particularly on weekends.

Barra, as it is popularly known, will have most of the venues of the 2016 Summer Olympics, which will be the first edition held in South America South America.

Directions: - Take the BUS 014 CASTELO close to BAR DO GOMES OR from Largo dos Guimarães (in front of the cinema) take the BUSES 006 or 014 and get off at the CARIOCA METRO STATION. Buy the METRO + BARRA EXPRESSO CARD inside the station and take the Metro towards the South Zone. Get off at IPANEMA METRO STATION and from General Osório Square, take the BARRA EXPRESSO BUS.
